The Texas Tech Red Raiders were looking forward to having incoming football recruit Nigel Bethel suit up in their secondary this season. However, that plan may be in jeopardy after the three-star recruit reportedly slugged a fellow student-athlete in the face.
According to the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, Bethel punched Texas Tech women's basketball star Amber Battle in the face on Saturday during an incident at the school's recreation center. The blow was severe enough to break a bone in Battle's face and thus require immediate surgery to repair.
A spokesman for the school told the paper that they were aware of the incident and were currently in the process of gathering information. The spokesman also said that a full report "likely won't be ready" until Monday at the earliest.
Battle led the women's basketball team in scoring (16.4 PPG) and rebounding (7.4 RPG) last season.
As for Bethel, he originally committed to his hometown Miami Hurricanes before flopping to Texas Tech right before signing day. He is considered one of the highest-rated recruits in Texas Tech's incoming class.
