Charles Barkley says 'it would be a travesty to the game' if Carmelo Anthony goes to Heat
Charles Barkley is not a fan of the possiblity that Carmelo Anthony could join the Miami Heat.
Appearing as a guest on The Starters earlier this week, the opinionated Barkley expressed his dismay at the potential of Anthony joining forces with the Big Three in Miami.
“If that happens, it’d be a travesty for the game,” Barkley said. “I don’t understand why these guys are afraid to compete against each other. That’s what sports are — a competition. As much Heat hate as I have, it’d only grow. If they get Carmelo, they’d be the overwhelming favorite.”
Overwhelming favorite is absolutely correct, Chuck. The Heat are already an unstoppable force in the Eastern Conference without Anthony. And adding him to the fold would further tip the already lopsided scale in Miami's favor.
With that being said, and perhaps this is stating the obvious, but it would take a huge financial sacrifice on the part of Anthony for such a scenario to happen. He would essentially be taking a monumental pay cut to join the Heat as opposed to signing elsewhere. While he could potentially land a deal hovering around $100 million with New York or another team, Anthony would likely have to settle for a deal under $60 million in order to fit into Miami's payroll.
