Charles Barkley says 'it would be a travesty to the game' if Carmelo Anthony goes to Heat

Charles Barkley is not a fan of the possiblity that Carmelo Anthony could join the Miami Heat.

Appearing as a guest on The Starters earlier this week, the opinionated Barkley expressed his dismay at the potential of Anthony joining forces with the Big Three in Miami.

“If that happens, it’d be a travesty for the game,” Barkley said. “I don’t understand why these guys are afraid to compete against each other. That’s what sports are — a competition. As much Heat hate as I have, it’d only grow. If they get Carmelo, they’d be the overwhelming favorite.”

Overwhelming favorite is absolutely correct, Chuck. The Heat are already an unstoppable force in the Eastern Conference without Anthony. And adding him to the fold would further tip the already lopsided scale in Miami's favor.

With that being said, and perhaps this is stating the obvious, but it would take a huge financial sacrifice on the part of Anthony for such a scenario to happen. He would essentially be taking a monumental pay cut to join the Heat as opposed to signing elsewhere. While he could potentially land a deal hovering around $100 million with New York or another team, Anthony would likely have to settle for a deal under $60 million in order to fit into Miami's payroll.

  1. Heat would still need a center to man the post.

  2. Barkley forgets when he joined forces with Olajuwon and Pippen in Houston to win a ring.

Wasn't Barkley traded to Houston in '96? He didn't leave as a free agent. Big difference.

  4. The Heat would become a WORSE team with Carmelo, since he's nothing but a ball hog. He and LeBron would be competing for shot attempts and points, much the same way Carmelo and Iverson were when they both played for Denver. The Heat players wouldn't be happy because they had to take a pay cut to get this ball hog, and accept reduced roles brought on by the selfish play of the ball hog. Carmelo destroys the chemistry of any team he plays on.

  7. Why must the NBA allow this to happen? Chris Paul was not allowed to play for Lakers, any reason why? i still don't get the point there. Now if they allow Carmelo to play for tha Heat, I believe that would be unjustifiable.

  8. Instead of Carmelo, the Heat should consider acquiring a legitimate center. That's where, I think, the Heat's weakness is.

  10. Hey, there shouldn't be a big fuss about all this, it's called FREE AGENCY folks, the players now have the right to go where they want to go.100 million is very nice to have but now players want to have their cake and eat it too, give me 60 million play with my homies, and win rings and have my name tarnished by haters who fail to realize this is the system that was brought in ooh but in the meantime you have a complaint of the owners who win, nor their fans that have a chance to have the best players. Not saying it's a good thing but this is the system and until it changes we might as well let this thing play out. Money is good, but money with rings is better, that's the players view on it now, you blame them?

  11. My last comment should have said the owners and their fans have would no complaints if they land the big names and win. thank you, if your team has a chance to be a super power that team or city would not complain... would they?

  13. SA will give the the same ol' Texas style spanking. The Spurs have got the Heat's number. Miami beat SA by sheer luck last year. SA came back with a vengeance this year and "it ain't gonna be no different" next year, Melo or not.

  14. I'm sad for the Alzheimer's sufferers posting here. 1. No complaints about Boston bringing in Allen and Garnett to win a championship? 2. Barkley had a "no trade", he wanted to come to Houston (and drove Hakeem away) and ruined any championship hopes for the Rockets. Lebron is not a ball hog in fact he's TOO UNSELFISH. Carmelo would be great if you get rid of Bosh, get a rim protector, and a decent point guard. Riley should be ashamed for not getting a good big man and point guard and working King James like a Georgia mule!

    1. Boston gave up 5 players , 2 no# 1 draft picks and a couple million to get KG. They gave up a couple players and their no#1 draft pick to get Ray Allen.......this is the way its suppose to work. Not making sly deals under the table like when they got Lebron & Bosh, and now taking considerably less money to get Melo........no pride....no shame....greed.

  15. Carmelo joining the Heat will have an impact on the Eastern Conference but not really sure about NBA championship. Anyone remembers 2004 Lakers? With Shaq, Kobe, Karl Malone, Gary Payton etc. That's a legitimate all star team that was beaten by supposedly overmatched Detroit Pistons team. Also who did Charles picked as would be the 2013-2014 NBA champs, the Heat of course?!
