Video: Algerian runner loses race after celebrating too early

It's not over until it's over. This is a phrase any sports fan has heard too many times. However, Algerian runner Taoufik Makhloufi was reminded of it once again on Sunday after losing a race in the most embarrassing way imaginable.

The scene came during the 800 meter dash in the Diamond League competition in Shangahi. As you can see, Makhloufi held a narrow lead down the stretch before beginning to wave his arms and wag his tongue in premature victory. This is when 18-year-old Kenyan runner Robert Biwott emerged from behind to snatch the first place finish away from Makhloufi. Oh, and also the $10,000 grand prize.

Amazingly, Makhloufi did not learn of his demise until several minutes after the end of the race. Instead, he kept raising his arms and posing for the cameras before a meet official finally came over and sent Makhloufi tumbling back to Earth from cloud nine.
