Pat White: Alabama offered me a Corvette to sign with them

Was Pat White offered a Corvette by the University of Alabama to play football for them? That is what the former West Virginia University quarterback implies in a recent comment he left on Facebook.

The issue came about after current Alabama running back Derrick Henry posted a photo on Instagram of himself posing beside his new sports car. Naturally, the post sparked immediate speculation that Henry might be on the receiving end of an impermissible benefit. Namely, how an unpaid college athlete could afford such a luxurious material possession.

On Thursday, White chimed in with his thoughts on the matter by leaving a comment on his Facebook page. The comment read: "Stop pretending like you didn't know the crimson tide has been doing this for years. Still glad I turned down a Corvette to become a mountaineer."

Wait, what?

Apparently, Nick Saban wasn't too pleased when asked about the claims Thursday afternoon (Warning: NSFW). To be fair, Saban wasn't around in 2004 when Alabama would have allegedly made the offer to White. The head coach during that year was Mike Shula.

Still, the photo uploaded by Henry certainly invited a lot of scrutiny from folks chomping at the bit to point out wrongdoing. While there hasn't been any evidence to suggest Henry received the car as a gift from the program, the lesson learned here is that college athletes may be better off to avoid such controversy altogether by not flaunting their cars and such on social media. In today's day and age, that's pretty much asking for it.
