Mike Krzyzewski takes a job at the tournament worthiness of smaller conference schools

Tomorrow marks one of the most anticipated days of the season for college basketball: Selection Sunday.

Mike Krzyzewski and his Duke Blue Devils are in line to receive a favorable seed when the bracket is announced. However, some fellow Atlantic Coast Conference teams won't be so lucky, as they will find themselves on the outside looking in of the NCAA Tournament.

But Coach Krzyzewski doesn't believe that should be the case. After his squad defeated N.C. State in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, Coach K met with the media and explained why a bubble team like N.C. State is more deserving of a tournament bid than schools from smaller conferences. Namely, the Atlantic-10.

I said to [N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried] at the end of the game, “I hope you guys get in.” I don’t understand it. They won at Tennessee. They probably should have beaten Syracuse twice. I think they’ve played a really good schedule, and they’ve got one of the best players in the country…. I’ll get in trouble probably for saying it. Like the Atlantic 10, they’re a really good conference. I hear people saying there are six teams in there. Come on. I mean, they’re good, but put them in our conference and go through the meat grinder that our conference has to go through.

All in all, the A-10 could receive as many as six bids come Sunday night. Saint Louis, VCU, Dayton, George Washington, St. Josephs and UMass all figure to have good odds of making the field. Meanwhile, the ACC has a chance to receive just as many, but maybe even less.

  1. Snob. Wasn't Lehigh a smaller school that knocked you and your over rated team out in first round of NCAA March of 2012?

Wasn't it little Belmont that nearly did the same thing in 2008 when refs blatantly gave game to Duke.

How about Vermont University? From America East Conference that barely lost to Duke by 1 point at Duke this past Nov 24th 2013.

Coach K, keep thoughtless comments to yourself. Why hasn't the NCAA negate your 2009 & 2010 seasons since you played two ineligible players?

    1. I know that "anonymous". My point was that Coach K's comment was baseless about small schools being unable to compete against big conference schools. Since Duke beat NC State and is favored I referenced Duke's losses/near loses to smaller schools showing that small conference schools are not as uncompetitive as Coach K claims.
