College basketball player's mom wins $1 million in lottery

East Carolina guard Akeem Richmond may have finished his college career with a loss earlier this week. But it's safe to say he's already over the sting of defeat after his mom hit it big on a scratch-off lottery ticket.

The pleasant surprise came less than 24 hours after Richmond's Pirates fell to Wright State in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. To call it good timing would be an understatement.

His mother opted for the lump sum payout of roughly $415,000 and plans to use that cash to pay off her mortgage and take a vacation.

As for Richmond, he finished his senior campaign just seven three-pointers shy of tying Steph Curry's single-season record of 162.
