Photo: Crews deflate Metrodome roof for good

Metrodome deflated

An iconic piece of the Minneapolis skyline literally disappeared Saturday morning as construction crews permanently deflated the roof of the Metrodome.

Home of the Minnesota Vikings since 1982, crews began deflating the roof at 7:15 a.m. in a process that involved shutting off fans and opening up vents to let compressed air out.

By 8 a.m., the roof was completely down, aided in part by the falling snow that blanket the Minnesota region Friday night into Saturday.

Demolition of the Metrodome will continue beginning on Jan. 20. The Vikings will move into their new home by the time the 2016 season rolls around.
