Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz pledges to buy beer for fans

Fans of legal age who attend the women's basketball game between Louisville and LSU on Thursday will be treated to a round of beers on the house, courtesy of Cardinals head coach Jeff Walz. Well, at least for the first 2,500 anyways.

Walz has pledged to buy a brew for the first couple thousand beer-drinking fans in attendance at the KFC Yum! Center as his No. 5 Cards host the Tigers. He said the motive for his offer is to provide an invitation for Louisville fans to come check out his squad.

"We're just trying to have a little bit of a good time here at the ballgame," said Walz. "Make sure you have a designated driver if you want to come and have a few of them.

"It's a little way to say thanks to all our adults who come and support us, and we're just trying to get some of our fans who haven't come out to come on out one time and get a drink and enjoy the ballgame and hopefully grab the attention of a few more fans."

So, how do eager fans get their hands on a free beer?

Amy Morgan, Louisville's assistant athletic director for marketing, said Budweiser and Bud Light beers and all soft drinks will be $2 at the game. As for the free beer, there will a table inside the arena where the first 2,500 fans 21 or older with proper ID can pick up a voucher — that Walz has paid for — for one drink to redeem at the concession stands. There is a limit of one voucher per person.

This isn't the first time Louisville's athletic department has enticed fans with a beer promotion. Earlier this year, the school offered $1 beers at the spring football game, as a way to draw a larger crowd for a team coming off of a Sugar Bowl win against Florida. As you might imagine, it worked, as Louisville posted its highest attendance total in spring game history.
