Florida Atlantic assistant says he saw Carl Pelini use drugs

2013-10-31 FAU coach

Carl Pelini was fired from his head coaching position at Florida Atlantic this week after two informants swore in an affidavit that they saw Pelini use drugs.

As fate would have it, one of these informants is none other than a member of Pelini's coaching staff, Matt Edwards, who coaches the defensive line and special teams.

In the affidavit, Edwards confessed that he personally saw Pelini smoke marijuana on Oct. 19 in Key West, Fla., and also confessed to witnessing Pelini and assistant coach Pete Rekstis, who was also fired for using drugs, use both marijuana and cocaine within the last 12 months.

The affidavit was used by athletic director Patrick Shun to use as evidence to lead to the demise of both Pelini and Rekstis.

Edwards remains on the coaching staff for the time being.

Pelini compiled a 5-15 record during his tenure with the Owls.
