Donovan McNabb receives wrath of fans after proclaiming NASCAR drivers aren't athletes

Donovan McNabb has a troubling tendency of saying things that land him in unfavorable positions with people.

The latest testiment to this fact came Friday night during an appearance on Fox Sports Live when the former NFL quarterback triggered NASCAR fans to lash out at him after proclaiming that he doesn't believe NASCAR drivers are athletes.

Uh oh. Big mistake, Donovan!

McNabb was asked to rank the most dominant athletes over the last decade, and chose to put Jimmie Johnson third behind Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant, which isn't reason in of itself for NASCAR fans to get mad. Well, until McNabb said this.

“Do I think he’s an athlete? Absolutely not,” McNabb said.

“He’s not an athlete,” McNabb said. “He sits in a car and he drives. That’s not athletic…. What athletically is he doing?”

And thus the hashtag #PeopleWhoAreMoreAthleticThan Donovan McNabb was born only to become the No. 1 trending topic in the United States at one point Friday night.

Johnson took the high road when responding to McNabb's comments:
Well, it has to be asked, do you agree or disagree with McNabb?

  2. DIFFERENT SKILL SET FROM MOST SPORTS, BUT TREMENDOUS HAND EYE COORDINATION AS WELL AS EXTREME MENTAL TOUGHNESS. THE ABILITY TO OVERCOME PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS SPORTS AND PERFORM UNDER EXTREME PRESSURES AND EXTREME CONDITIONS, WHERE A SMALL MENTAL LAPSE COULD BE FATAL, NOT JUST A PICK SIX AS MR MC NABB IS SO ACCUSTOMED TO.

  4. Oh wow congratulations, he held the steering wheel to the left and pushed a gas pedal... so athletic. So everytime I pull onto a major highway I'm in the same category as Michael Jordan, Barry Sanders, Wayne Gretsky and Hank Aaron. You Nascar retards need to get a grip, none of you are athletes, you're a bunch of goofballs driving a car around a track.

    3. What an idiot! Could you drive 160 MPH in a pack of cars for hours on end? If you knew anything about NASCAR drivers, you would know that they all work out to increase their strength and endurance, sharpen their mental focus and navigate through a field of 40 plus flying cars. You would never make it. Get a grip, and LEARN something before you judge!

    5. and you Sir/Madame have the intellect of a snail. However, you probably are in the pulling onto a major highway (provided you can find one) as Jordan, Sanders, or Gretsky ..... they being retired ya know! But you have exhibited that your mental alertness isn't and I doubt their quickness is close to a NASCAR' driver's. Now I think I just heard mommy and daddy calling for you to go beddy-bye!

  5. Know for a fact that some (not all) Nascar Drivers were/are very much athletes. Ex: Mark Martin, Carl Edwards. Most Nascar Drivers have to be in some kind of decent shape, right ?
Formula 1 Drivers: Take part in triathlons, do bicycling regularly and are very much endurance athletes as well. They have to endure G-Forces.

  6. jimmie johnson runs marathons, can you Donovan, i think not

  7. When will they realize some NASCAR drivers do triathlons? Trevor Bayne was second in his age group in one last year. Josh Wise and Blake Koch were also in it.

  8. For all of you skeptics about Nascar drivers, lets see you ride in a car with one of them on a flat track going around a curve at 200 mph and see how long it takes you to piss your pants when you see that wall in the center of the curve coming right at you. Try putting your foot against a wall for 3 1/2 to 4 hours ( full pressure )

  10. How can you say that JJ is not an athlete when he does triathlons and marathons outside of the hours upon hours in a racecar enduring the mental and physical stress. Tired of people who are jealous of others putting them down...McNabb, do your research on someone before you say that they arent an athlete.

  11. put your ass in a car and see if you can do it, I don't think so, you wouldn't make it 50 miles.

  12. McNabb don't know Crap, if he thinks he can do what Jimmie Johnson does on any given day, Lets see him try to handle Dayga, or Bristol, or any of these track at the speed he does.
these Drivers not just Jimmie but any of them are more of an athlete that he is.

  13. Seem to remember back in the 80s when this issue of athletes came up. They tested all sports in coordination, physical condition and fitness. NASCAR drivers came up as one of the top conditioning and with the reflexes of an NFL wide receiver. Be interesting if McNabb at his fittest could endure 500 to 600 miles at the speeds and associated G Forces these drivers endure, not just for a little 16 week season but 36 grueling weeks. Donovan, I seriously doubt you ever took a body slam most of these drivers have endured slamming into a wall at 180+ mph. Think before you speak Mr. Feetball!

  14. Do not care, if J.J is an athlete, or not but most of the fans, do not like cheaters, getting, but, not wining , six championships !! no way, no how, could, his car be that much faster, and better, than 42, more cars, at every race!! hendrick, is determined, to get 8, championships, and beat Dale, and Richard, and most of the fans, know how they do it! the drivers, who are , saying all the right things, I bet its not what they are really thinking! l o l !!

  15. McNads is a fool. How many times did he play while hurt? It doesn't take much for a football player to be benched because of an injury. However, NASCAR drivers have, and will, continue to drive hurt. Bobby Labonte suffered cracked ribs and yet continued to drive. Jeremy Mayfield had an oil cooler go out on him (there is a 32 quart oil tank that sits directly behind the driver). Further, the oil lines run behind the drivers seat. So for the better part of a couple of hours, there was 350 degree oil coursing through the lines that ran behind his seat, yet he continued to drive and eventually win. Afterwards, he had to be treated for second degree burns on his back and dehydration.

  16. I like JJ but I don't think he could play qb in the nfl the same as Mcnabb couldn't drive a nascar.

  17. Football players play for about 15 minutes out of the hour of game time, not for three hours strait without a time out. How about that McNabb?

  18. Race car drivers keep their feet on the pedals, as opposed to football players like Mr. McNabb, who obviously prefers to keep his in his mouth. Lucky for him, his mouth is plenty big enough.

  19. I have played college football and raced on short tracks to super speedways and racing in a hot car for long periods of time on the complete edge of wrecking is MUCH more difficult than football, baseball, basketball, etc. Been there done that.
