Steve Spurrier clearly frustrated with Jadeveon Clowney

Jadeveon Clowney's mother, Josenna, expects her son to play for South Carolina in 2013.

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier is clearly frustrated with star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney did not play in South Carolina's win against Kentucky on Saturday after the All-American made a decision not to suit up just prior to kickoff.

Apparently, the coaching staff was extremely surprised by Clowney's decision to pull himself out of action, adding that they believed Clowney's services would be available for the conference affair.

After the game, Spurrier seemed perturbed with Clowney, and proceeded to unleash the following words as evidence.

"I will just say he told me he couldn’t play. That his ribs hurt, couldn’t run. Said ‘I can’t play.’ I said, that’s fine, you don’t have to play. We’ll move on. He may not be able to play next week, I don’t know. We’re not going to worry about it, I can assure you that if he wants to play, we’ll welcome him to come play for the team if he wants to.

“If he doesn’t want to play, he doesn’t have to play, simple as that. We were thinking he was going to suit up and play. He did not practice Thursday. Couldn’t run. Said he couldn’t play. Any time a player says he’s hurt, can’t play, who are we to question? He doesn’t play.”

As the possible No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, it's easy to see why Clowney would lean on the side of caution in regards to his health. Clowney is currently battling a rib ailment, in addition to some bone spurs in his foot that he has reportedly battled since his high school days. He is expected to undergo surgery following this season to take care of the issue.

In the meantime, it's evident that Clowney isn't exactly in the best of graces with his head coach. Aside from the injuries and perceived unwillingness to play hard through the pain, Clowney has had somewhat of a disappointing season thus far, statistically speaking.

When asked if he would play against Arkansas next weekend, Clowney responded, "I don't know."

  1. I think Clowney should play for his team, not himself.
