The tradition of slapping hands with the opposing team will no longer be permitted in Kentucky high school sports.
On Tuesday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association announced a ban on postgame handshakes. Additionally, the KHSAA also announced that officials are to leave the playing field immediately at the conclusion of a contest. Yeah, seriously.
Schools and officials who don't follow the new protocol will be held responsible and fined by the KHSAA if any conflicts occur.
“It is disappointing that this action has become necessary, but enough incidents have occurred both in our state and in others that the necessity has arrived,” the KHSAA said in a news release.
The KHSAA cited more than two dozen incidents in the last three years in which fights and physical conflicts have occurred after competition.
