San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner was not happy about being fined $21,000 by the league for a hit he made in last Thursday's game.
So, as a symbol of protest, Whitner decided to change his last name to "Hitner" and is selling t-shirts bearing the message "#LegalHitner" to help spread the word.
Whitner said he followed through with the idea only after asking his mother for permission to officially drop the "W" in his name.
It remains to be seen whether or not Whitner's alleged name change will be evident when he takes the field on Sunday. It may take awhile before the league approves and processes the change and places a name plate on his jersey that bears his new moniker.
For the record, the shirts are being sold for $28 a piece.
