Brad Keselowski says doctors don't belong in NASCAR: 'Let them play in their arena and I'll play in mine'

Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski says doctors have no place in NASCAR.

On Friday, Keselowski was asked about NASCAR's new concussion policy which takes effect next season, and he expressed concern over how the doctors will be able to accurately decide whether a potentially concussed driver can race or not.

"Doctors don't understand our sport," Keselowski told reporters after his qualifying lap at Martinsville Speedway. "They never have and they never will. Doctors aren't risk-takers. We are. That's what makes our sport what it is and when you get doctors involved, it waters down our sport.

"I'm trying to be open-minded to the possibility they can help us, but past experience says no."

On Thursday, NASCAR announced it would implement a mandatory baseline test during the preseason, the University of Pittsburgh's ImPACT test, to save for later in case doctors need to evaluate whether a driver has sustained a concussion during a crash.

The test doesn't have right or wrong answers, however, it is supposed to give doctors an image on how athletes think and how quickly they make decisions.

But Keselowski is still skeptical about the fact that there isn't a set standard associated with the test.

"It's just another subjective field for doctors that don't understand our sport," he said. "... This is not the field for doctors. Let them play in their arena and I'll play in mine."

  1. Bad Brad your comments make doctors in Nascar even more important as I'm sure you are having concussion issues with your brainless comment

    1. Exactly right,I mean Yah why not do away with restrictor plates and rear wings and helmets and Hans devices while theyre at it and lets just see who is the bravest one out there,I would pay good money to see that kinda racing!

    3. He is an idiot.

    4. He says watered down, what does he want to do? How about wearing his t-shirt and jeans and a small helmet in a car with the windows all open and the next thing to being strictly a stock car. That is the way I remember stock car racing when I learned to love it. If the car got too hot during a race, too bad. He is an idiot.

    5. As a lifelong racer and motorsports fan, I cringe when someone like BK makes a statement like this. He always seems to be the least informed driver out there and instead of coming off as a serious professional he instead chooses to act like an 8th grader. I initially thought his whole PR approach was an act but it's becoming more apparent this young man is just not very bright. Very sad.....

    6. And you Brad clearly will have no problem continuing to race as your baseline study will be poor to begin with. No worries there.

  4. A prime example where you should think before speaking? Not the Nascar spokesman (Champion) that I was hoping for. I myself think this is far overdue.

  5. Dont dont HAVE to understand your sport - all they have to do is understand concussions.. Maybe Mr Keselowski needs some time in the quiet room

  6. Brad is right.Just imagine a Dr who is an avid race fan and a driver gets hurt, that Dr can manipulate the race drivers chance of winning or losing the points battle or fix a race if he wanted to.Whos to say a driver gets paid off to give a dr. the wrong answers helping another teammate win the points battle.Whos checking the drs.?

  7. Brad you need to keep your mouth SHUT or maybe take your foot out of it! This is for all the drivers safety, or maybe if your so against it how about you run the races with no roll bars no helmet no hans device and no seat belts. That would solve all of your disagreements about the testing. You are such a inmature little idiot with a mouth you need to keep shut!

  8. The doctors better check Keselowski for a concussion, or wait, maybe they should check for a brain first.

  9. Brad is living proof that you don't need a brain to drive in Nascar. Now I finally understand Kyle Petty :-)

  10. Seriously, Brad! Concussions are dangerous, or have you not heard about brain damage leading to suicides by so many NFL players. I would hate to be one of the other 42 drivers on the track with a driver who has suicidal ideations!

  12. brad is an immature little boy. he has no say in the chase so he had to find something else to try to and make the news. I used to like him, until he opened his buck tooth mouth.

  13. I find Brad's comments refreshing. He speaks his mind and doesn't parrot the corporate line. In a lot of ways he seems like a throwback to the glory days of NASCAR when colorful characters like Allison, Yarborogh and even Dale Sr. prowled the tracks. I think NASCAR is better for him and would benefit greatly by a few more like him.

  14. Brad couldnt get a concussion anyway. Concussion require a real brain. Brad has poop for brains!

  15. Brad has not brain and he should just keep his mouth shut everything that comes out garbage. Nascar should do something with him see if he is able to drive a race car.

  16. what's next all races must be under 100 mph, depending on weather conditions rest stop ever 50 laps, mufflers damn cars are way to loud BP & pulse monitored gets to high black flag touch another veh while racing drive through penalty maybe we need drivers and crew member unions... and races will have to be shortened 500 t0 600 laps way to long....

  17. Brad is turning into the biggest idiot in Nascar. Along with Logano, Hamlin and a few others. Go back to the sandbox boys....

  18. I am fully convinced that a Brain concussion was the reason for the weird action's of NASCAR'S Dick trickle which led to his permanent Ban from Nascar and eventual suicide

  19. Brads point is valid. If youre going to have a concussion standard, shouldnt you have some sort of clue what they do. He's not saying "dont be safe". He's saying look, you dont know what we do. you cant just come in and start telling people they have concussions. Heres another point. These guys get paid a hell of a lot of money to drive these cars. Crashes happen. If you dont like it, the go find a job in the driving pool..

  20. Brad, doctors may not fully understand what drivers do - but you surely do not understand medicine. Sounds like you're afraid of something...
