Mets trade Marlon Byrd on same day of his promotional giveaway

On Tuesday, it became known that an unknown National League team claimed New York Mets outfielder Marlon Byrd off waivers. It turns out that the team was none other than the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two clubs eventually worked out a trade sending Byrd and catcher John Buck to the Steel City in exchange for a minor league prospect and player to be named later, instead.

The timing of the deal couldn't be worse, or perhaps better, depending on how you look at it. The reason for this being the fact that the Mets are giving away t-shirts at Citi Field Tuesday night in honor of their departed outfielder.

The shirts feature a baseball with wings on the front with a message reading "Let It Fly" and Byrd's name and No. 6 on the back.

Oh, well. Souvenirs, anyone?
