Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe claims he slimmed down 15-20 pounds during the offseason and showed up to mini camp at a trim 335. Poe played at around 350 pounds last season and says he credits his weight loss to cutting out barbecue from his diet.
“It might be the hardest thing I’ve had to do since I’ve been here,” he said.
Poe isn't kidding, either. He grew up in Memphis and plays professional football in Kansas City. Both cities are considered one of the premier spots for barbecue lovers. So, staying away from the sweet and saucy chunks of goodness was no small task.
Poe seems to think it was worth giving up, though.
“I feel like I can play more plays, without getting as tired or exhausted,” Poe said. “My mind is staying strong out there. And I can play faster.”
The 22-year-old posted a solid rookie season for the Chiefs in 2012. The first round pick played in all 16 games and accumulated 38 tackles and 4 pass deflections. Perhaps his display of self discipline and determination will provide an increase in productivity in 2013?
If not, he can always indulge in a slab of ribs or two after the season to help ease the pain.
