Joey Chestnut eats record 69 hot dogs to win title
Joey Chestnut is king of the competitive eating world once again.
On Thursday, the American captured his seventh straight Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing a record 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The mark passed the previous contest record of 68 dogs and buns set by Chestnut in 2012.
The outlook for Chestnut breaking the record didn't look good near the end of the dubious contest. However, spurred on by the cheers of the Coney Island crowd, Chestnut labored through and pushed down the amount of hot dogs needed to shatter his personal best.
The whole spectacle was televised live by ESPN.
Earlier in the day, Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas won the women's contest after eating 36.75 hot dogs, narrowly edging out rival Juliet Lee, who downed 36 in 10 minutes.
Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
