Newly christened sports agent Jay-Z is in the process of "wooing" Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig, according to a report by Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Jay-Z's newly-founded agency, Roc Nation Sports, already represents New York Yankees second basemen Robinson Cano, Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant, and WNBA rookie Skylar Diggins. But apparently they want baseball's most talked about player at the present, too.
Burgeoning agent Jay-Z is wooing Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasiel Puig, hoping to add the 22-year-old to the growing stable of athletes he represents, two sources told Yahoo! Sports.
During a mid-June trip to New York, Puig was invited to a party at a club Jay-Z owns after a Dodgers teammate passed along the rapper’s contact information, one source said. Between the lifestyle and marketing plan offered by Roc Nation Sports, Puig left the meeting intrigued.
Intrigued, eh? Who wouldn't be?
Puig, 22, has bust onto the major league scene unlike any other player before him, batting .407 with eight home runs, 19 RBI, and 26 runs scored through his first 35 games. Some are already dubbing the Cuban native the sport's next big thing.
Puig won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2018 season, but Jay-Z wants to make sure he is the man representing him once the next lucrative contract offer comes along.
For the record, Passan also reports that Jay-Z is interested in another Cuban native, as well. That player is none other than Oakland A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
Next week, Cespedes will be in New York, Jay-Z's hometown, for the Home Run Derby, and Puig could be as well if he wins the Final Vote for the last slot on the National League All-Star team.
If Puig does decide to sign with Roc Nation, his current agent, Jaime Torres, would receive the full commission on the seven-year, $42 million deal signed in June 2012.
