Mass confusion was the theme in the top of the ninth inning during the Cubs win over the Mets Saturday afternoon.
Chicago had the bases loaded with no outs when Darwin Barney struck a ball to shallow center field. Mets center fielder Juan Lagares came charging in and appeared to make a shoestring catch to take away a hit from Barney. But wait.
The umpires did not see things that way and it set the table for the incredibly awkward events that immediately ensued. Sit back and watch the whole mess unfold as players, coaches, and the umpires try and make sense of it all.
Eventually, the umpires upheld the ruling that Lagares did not catch the baseball and thus, a forceout at second was made when Lagares rifled the ball back toward the infield.
Leave it to the Cubs to be involved with such a folly.
