Top 10 Sports Illustrated swimsuit models of all-time

There has been a countless number of gorgeous woman who have appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue since the first magazine was published in 1964.

The annual release of the publication is traditionally one of the most anticipated magazines of the year for both sports lovers and red-blooded American males alike.

So, in tribute to the incredibly successful run the annual edition has enjoyed, Sports Illustrated counted down the 50 Greatest Swimsuit Models of all-time during this past week. As you might imagine, the list is littered with both modern supermodels and supermodels from the past.

Here is a rundown on who SI tabbed as the top 10.

10) Paulina Porizkova

- Porizkova, a native of Czechoslovakia, was the first woman from Central Europe to be featured on the cover (1984), and became only the second model to ever appear on back-to-back covers when she graced the front again in 1985.

9) Bar Refaeli

- Refaeli became the first Israeli model to be featured in the magazine when she graced the 2009 cover. She has made five overall appearances in the magazine to date.

8) Christie Brinkley

- Brinkley, a Michigan native, made eight different appearances in the issue over her career. However, she is most remembered for her run of three straight covers from 1979-81.

7) Brooklyn Decker

- The Ohio native was featured in six consecutive issues from 2006-11, including the 2010 cover, and hosted a behind-the-scenes television special in 2007. Decker is married to retired tennis player Andy Roddick.

6) Cheryl Tiegs

- Tiegs, a Minnesota native, was featured on three covers throughout her career and is widely credited as being the first supermodel. She made 11 appearances in all for the annual magazine. 

5) Heidi Klum

- The German native has been featured in eight swimsuit issues over the years and donned the cover of the 1998 edition. She is also a successful businesswoman, designer, and television personality.

4) Tyra Banks

- Banks, a California native, was the first African-American model to be featured on the cover when she went back-to-back in 1996-97. She is also known for hosting America's Next Top Model.

3) Kate Upton

- The Michigan native has appeared on the last two swimsuit covers after earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. The 2013 edition was the first time a shoot has taken place in Antarctica.

2) Kathy Ireland

- The native Californian was featured in 12 issues and graced the cover of three of them. The 25th anniversary cover from 1989 remains the best-selling issue to date.

1) Elle Macpherson

- No other model has occupied the front cover of the magazine more than Macpherson's five. The Australian native was featured in the magazine 10 different years and earned the nickname "The Body" for her successful run.
