Serena Williams releases another apology for explosive rape comments

(USA TODAY Sports Images)

Tennis star Serena Williams made headlines last week when comments she made in a Rolling Stone piece about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case went viral. For those who missed it, here is the controversial excerpt that landed her in hot water with majority of the public.

“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Williams issued an apology soon thereafter, however, her initial apology seemed to cast blame on the writer instead of taking responsibility. On Monday, Williams released a second and more heartfelt apology on her website. This time she took full responsibility for her comments and seemed much more sincere.

“I am deeply sorry for my insensitive and misinformed comments. It was not my intention to cause the victim and her family any additional pain. But I did, and I am sorry. I am grateful to them for the opportunity to personally apologize, and I am humbled by their strength, grace, and forgiveness.

“I also want to extend an apology to the millions of sexual assault victims in America whose pain could have been compounded by my inappropriate remarks. Rape and all forms of sexual assault are completely unacceptable, no matter the circumstances. Sexual assault perpetrated against women and men is never acceptable and *never* the fault of the victim.”

Williams' comments about the rape victim isn't the only thing that has got her into trouble lately, though. The feud between Williams and rival Maria Sharapova rose to another level this week after the former took to the media and slammed the Russian's personal life.

The two could very well meet each other in the Wimbledon Final if all goes as expected.

    4. I agree, it's never okay to make racist comments. Yet here you are running your ignorant mouth off with homophobic slurs and classist remarks? You're just as much a piece of shit as anybody else, pal. Take a second and evaluate yourself before you talk any sort of smack.

  3. Wow, a black star only needs to say I'm Sorry, Paula Deen continues to say it and her world is coming down. Time and time again blacks stars say bad things and then a I'm Sorry" covers it.

    1. Your comment shows how ignorant you are. Paula Deen is and was a fraud way before this incident, so maybe her comments just wasn't a big deal to you. The context of what they both said are two totally different levels, BUT most importantly, when did being an idiot, racist, sexist, or any other form of studpidity become a contest of ethinicity.

    2. OOOOOOHHHHHhhh so the poor tennis star was simply misunderstood when blaming THE RAPE VICTIM AND HER PARENTS instead of wait for it...wait for it...THE COWARD THAT RAPED A NEARLY PASSED OUT 16 YEAR OLD. You are the one who is insensitive. Different levels? You bet they are. The Food Channel should show the Balls the NFL did. M.V. had dogs fighting to the death, and electrocuting or hanging the losers in a tree. As soon as He was out of prison He became an Eagle and is making millions. Pac man was involved in a club shooting where a man is paralized and is in the NFL. Take you're ethnicity sob story and shove it. When saying your sorry works for professional athletes it should also apply to everyone else.

    3. IGNORANCE is so ugly. The only person playing the race card here is you and every other person here who brought up race. I don't see how you misunderstand that. Each and every person you've named has made idiotic mistakes. Now you can take issue with the punishment they were served, but to say they got off easy because they're black is a cop out to the bigger issue. It's all about fame, money and who you know, in where these celebrities chips fall. Every time there is an article about a black misbehaving there's always tons of comments with people like you saying 'she or he is playing the race card'.
You're so deep in your hatred that you didn't even understand that last comment. So let me make it more plain for you. PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS! AND it shouldn't matter what ethnicity, they should all face consequences PERIOD. But just like in our regular/normal lives, the punishment doesn't always match the crime and that's what sucks.

    7. This is insane. The Paula Deen incident didn't cause anyone any pain and suffering. She apologizes yet loses everything.
She has helped millions by teaching people how to cook. Serena has never helped anyone but herself, and she blurts out some ignorant comments about a situation she knows nothing about, yet I bet she doesn't lose a dime much less an endorsment. It is completely disheartening to keep hearing about racism, when most of the racism I see is the black hatred and public display towards whites.

  8. I am reading comments by a lot of angry people. Tis thing about race cards and ethnicity have no relationship to what the "real" problem that exists. people, no matter what color they are should not make comments about issues that they have no knowledge of. The comments by Ms Williams were insensitive and cruel, but most of all stupid as were Ms. Deen's. No one should get a pass on comments made in regards to anyone's situation regardless of what their status in the world is, celebrity or not.

    1. I think the world is going to hell in a hand basket. Paula Deen admitted her mistake and said she was sorry, still she is being ripped apart. She has lost her show along with other means of income, now will Miss Williams be thrown out of the tennis world for her comments on the rape of a young girl, no, Miss Williams will be permitted to play tennis and make money, why well she has said she was sorry so it is ok. I am sick of the race card being played whenever it suits someones means, I see it everyday where I work and it is shameful. Let the woman be and everyone should mind there own p's and q's

Although most of the ones that started this mess are answering to God for their ignorance, there are still people like you who think they are hiding under the radar. Its not hard to recognize people like you. Just remember, you wont find a single rascist soul in heaven, they are certainly entertaining satan for sure. Wher will you end up rascist? I forgot most of you dont believe in God anyway.

  17. Her initial comments were her Jehovah's Witnesses background talking. They tend to blame the victim for getting herself into a compromising situation rather than the perpetrator(s). They use the Biblical story of Dinah, the sister of Jacob's 12 sons, who "went to see the daughters of the land" of Caanan and ended up getting raped. They interpret it as Dinah allowing herself to get into trouble.

  20. Yes, we all speak out of line with this race thing/ both black and white. Just remember Black people was slaves in this great good old boy society for 400 plus years and we did not get paid for our accomplishments in society. We work for free. Maybe Serena was wrong on her comments and apology well accepted/ furthermore, it was not a only several of the accuser were black. Think America, the slave masters and police have been raping black womens for 400 plus years and they do not even go to court?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well where do I start? Serena's comments stem more from ignorance. Kind of like opening your mouth without thinking first. Then to hear what you just said and realize just how stupid your comment was. Not realizing you were blaming the victim, when you thought you were saying something that you thought had some moral fiber to it. Just dumb! Paula Dean on the other hand she kind of spoke without thinking also, but the difference was her comments did not come from a place of not knowing or not understanding. You see Serena's comments were dumb because she doesn't get it; Paula's comments are dumb because she let what was really in her heart slip out and now everyone knows who you really are. And last I am unsure of who is actually playing a race card, since race nor Paula Dean wasn't brought up until some of you "closet racist" (like your precious Paula)decided somehow that it was relevant and pertained to this conversation. I know the two words are one letter apart but their definitions aren't even close. So to be clear this article was about raPe and an ignorant comment made about an unfortunate horrible incident; not about raCe and an ignorant comment made from someone's unfortunate mouth revealing their horrible heart.

    1. Didn't the reporter eavesdrop on Serena's private telephone conversation? How does the reporter know what was said by the other person she was talking with? Didn't Serena say that what the boys did was wrong? What about the other people at the party that did nothing to stop the sexual assault rather they seem to have watched and videoed it instead. Why was this 16 y/o girl so drunk that she did not know what was going on or that she was sexually assaulted? How come she did not know she was sexually assaulted until it was posted online? All parties were wrong and should bear responsibility for what happened at the party including the sexual assault, and this includes the boys, the girl, the onlookers, the parents ...everybody. None of these people tried to stop the boys from what they were doing.

    2. This comment is by far the most intelligent comment I have reAD . tHE PARENTS WERE AT FAULT FOR NOT TEACHING HER WHAT SHE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT BOYS AND DRINKING. The girl was raped. I am a woman, and I can tell you up to this day, men will try to rape me if they have a mind to. So. I do not go out drinking alcoholic beverages. If I ask for a glass of water at your home , I ask for you to give me the glass I catch the water from the faucet and take a sip after I have washed the glass in your presence.I dont care who you are, you dont pour anything out for me.Gang rape is the worst thing.

Yes Serena was and is wrong but she is not and never will be ugly, she is beautiful all of you that say blacks are playing the race card need to remember who started the crap in the first place. I see that not much have changed in america over all these years regardless what race a person is God made us all and he loves us all there are some mean, ugly, racist, crazy, and nonsensitive people in all races so whoever made the comment about her being a man and ugly take a long look at self.

  25. What happen to freedom of speech? I maybe wrong but the writer of this article made this about race, not about what Serena said. Serena did not blame the girl, but the girl should have been held accountable for her part in that incident. Serena just said what a lot of people are thinking but not saying out loud. People should read the story on that rape case and get all the facts. And all of you are just racist idiots with theses comments including the writer. Who works for Fox right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well blacks may have been suppressed the past 200 years, but women have been beaten, raped, abbused and murdered for the last 2,000 years. And still are. Forget that Serena is black and let's look at the fact that she is a woman. SHAME! The abuse women still face in many countries is mind blowing. Most ethnic people have faced bigotry in some way over the years but none, including African Americans are even close to what women are still suffering today. In Egypt women are being raped daily and our told it is their fault for venturing outside the home. In Iraq it takes 5 men to testify that they witnessed a woman being raped for a man to be persecuted and if the woman should become pregnant from said rape? They tie her legs together when she goes into labor so she and her child die a horrific death. Shame on you Serena. You are an embarrassment to our gender.

  27. What is worse saying that a female caused herself to be raped or that a person used the n word.Maybe people should look in a dictionary for the defination of the word.I've used the n word in talking about white people and black people. This is the year 2013.Serena Williams is an idiot for what she said no question about it.I read all about the rape case and i wasn't thinking that this girl should be held accountable for what happened.I hope this girl gets a good lawyer and sues her, just like Paula Dean is being sued.

  28. Well said. She should be embarrassed. I guess fame and fortune rules the world (or she thinks it does).
I read her second apology. It is apparent that someone wrote it for
her. She does not have the intelligence nor the heart to write
    that herself.
And yes, she does look like Mike Tyson with a wig (as commented by

  35. I use to think that women could do a better job than a man about running the world. Now actually I would settle for an enlightened person. People are a product of their environment up until a certain point. Then this thing call free will can occur. It's free everyone has a chance to exercise it and few people really do. They get comfortable with little elitist attitudes and prejudices and never try to grow or expand their understanding of events or the world around them. We are being reduced to listening and watching petty, closed minded, self serving beings. Is that all there is?
