Serena Williams makes explosive comments on Ohio rape case

(USA TODAY Sports)

American tennis star Serena Williams has found herself in headlines once again. However, this time it's for all the wrong reasons.

The 31-year-old reportedly makes some explosive comments about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone. For those who may not be aware of the case, it involves the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl at the hands of two high school football players that occurred in August 2012. Both players were tried and convicted of the crime in March.

Here is a snippet of what she had to say:

“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
Whoa.

So, essentially Williams is saying the female is more at fault here than the players were. While it is definitely not advisable to engage in underage drinking, the crime committed by the players in this situation was undeniably worse. To suggest anything other than that is simply ignorant.

    2. You know Fredie I think the same thing about him/her/it,She's so manly rape wont ever be a problem unless of course she can outrun the other person,People really should never speak about things that will never be a problem in their lives,The fact is kids run around and do crazy things NEVER thinking anything can happen to them,Its really a societal and parental problem because you get outta life what you put into it,That goes for anything and of course there are exceptions but this isnt one of em!And when she plays a match aganst a real girl it looks almost unfair and you know the reasoniing!

    3. Guess you're hating on Serena because she keeps heself in shape. Sounds like your jealous whatever, excues me whoever your are. Just like you're speaking, she has the right speak her mind as well. I mean fair is fair, whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Or maybe you're one of the people who's life is so miserable you have down others to feel good about your miserable existence. As far as the crime goes, the young lady was definately the victim. The young men should have gotten more than what they did.

    6. Tell me: When did "to hate on" become a real verb? I realize that more and more this country is populated by morons, but this goes too far . . . dawg.

  4. i think its not that she is saying the players didn't rape her and comitt a heinous crime its just a girl serena who is from compton remember saying the girl shouldn't have put herself in that position...Easy media people on trying read between the lines and saying that serena is saying something more than she is actually stating.

When you grow up in the city or rough neighborhoods like compton you become more weary of your surroundings. Unlike a suburb like steubenville.

    1. I totally agree. if people would stop trying to be PC, then they would openly agree with Williams. I agree with her, the girl at 16 years old should not have been drinking. not saying what they did to her is right, but she did help put own self in that situation by underage drinking. She bears part of the fault on this. that is the problem with this society, if you play with fire and there is gaoline nearby, then you suffer the consequences if there is an explosion. if you decide to underage drink, and you know it is not legal, then you help to put yourself in any situation that you are caught in, right or wrong!

    2. Agree with above. I don't see anything wrong with what she said. Do any parents want their 16 yr old drinking around a group of guys? If the answer is yes then you better take a long look at yourself in the mirror. The guys did a horrible crime. However she committed a crime as well and put herself in a bad position.

    3. No I don't want my 16 year old daughter drinking but kids are going to make mistakes. This type of comment reminds me of the old mentality of she shouldn't dress like a whore!

  5. I don't think she was saying the girls was at fault, she's only making a statement warning young girls to be aware of their surroundings and under age drinking and partying is no way for a sixteen year old to live her life putting herself in danger.

  6. Shut up, what the hell is a 16 yo kid doing there drinking???
Where were her parents? White people always want to blame someone else!!!
Serena is speaking from experience! Her dad WATCHED HER EVERY MOVE! A good father !white kids geet soo much freedom to do what they want, when they get caught up, they want to blame others, instead of their bad parenting!!!!!!

BTW when you speak about white people collectively its no different if I do it about black people.

    3. Why you gotta say white kids? I didn't think she was blaming the girl she's trying to send a message to girls saying they should be more aware of their surroundings..that girl isn't at fault but she put herself in that position.

    4. And two regardless of race there's bad parents every where.. In this case the parents of the rapists clearly didnt raise them with any morals and two where's the responsible girls parents making sure their 16 yr old daughter isn't letting her self be put in those positions...

    5. Yep us Whites ALWAYS blame someone else. I think it's Bush's fault! If we hadn't been held down for 6000 years, we would still be canibals enjoying the great job of overseeing Africa that we have been doing for the last 100000 years.

    2. why is it that we only hear about 'white women "being raped. it strikes me that if is not race why do we only hear about white women. its the same about when white kids\adults going missing. to be honest when its never about he said she said...its about what she said. why? its the politcial winds. men and boys have to be careful these days. more than likely you will be found guilty even if the evidence says different. all the girl has to do is start crying and the juries will believe what she says. by no means am i saying rape doesn't happen. it does! but how many times have we heard about people doing time and then years lately we hear they didn't. and do think the prosecutors can said sorry/ hell no!! they were just doing thier job. really? simply put women be careful about want position you put yourself in. the reality is it can make a different.

  11. Wow, it turns racial. Really ?? Be careful throwing stones if you live in a glass house. You might not want to hear the "truth" yourself. Check the statistics on which race has the greatest number of unwed pregnancies and multiple children from multiple irresponsible dads. Black on black crime is rampant. Is that good parenting ? You can't blame everything on the whites for the rest of your life. It's not a crime to make a stupid mistake by drinking too much. It is a crime to rape someone. Don't be an idiot ldhjr1 - think before you talk, and put a shirt on

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think that you are now making it racist. This has nothing to do w/ black on black crime or unwed pregnancies. This is about a 16yr old girl (be it black or white or whatever) she is too young to be drinking and too young to have been out partying. I agree that she should have been at home; but that doesn't give the guys that raped her the right to do what they did. white people do allow their kids more freedom and the way that some of them talk to their parents is unreal. If I was 16 and looked at my mom the wrong way....I would not be making this comment. I'd be dead!

  14. It's stupid when one the media blows this up like she made some awful remark.
She spoke the truth..it's also stupid that now people have to throw race cards everywhere..fact of the matter is this happens all the time regardless of race. What she said was true she brought out the underlying issue where's the parents why was this girl in this position.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Holy shit. Some of you people are morons. Unbelievable. So because she was willingly inebriated, it's her fault for being raped? Pretty straight-forward question. Is it a rape victim's fault for being raped? When people can't fuckin contemplate such an easy issue of morality and then *blame* the girl or her parents, it's a serious indictment on society. That's right, you self-righteous idiots: *you* are blaming someone else. Who the fuck knows why, but it's pathetic. Don't want to admit an idol said something completely idiotic?

"[M]aybe she wasn't a virgin..." Lol. Wtf? Yeah, maybe have that sort of internal dialogue before posting it and removing all doubt of being a fool. So did the parents of the boys fail at teaching them the morality of *raping* someone? So silly of how some of you are reading into her comments - "she meant..." Uh, it's all right there. Her simple mind put it quite simply. Yet, you believe others are misinterpreting, when it's you attempting to clarify.

So to answer her initial question, yet it's fair. And it's fair for her to get rebuked. And if you don't think so, just keep blathering. You're in no way setting yourselves up for a verbal bitchslap. But don't blame me.

    1. I bet you believe everything you read... like Obama is intelligent and liberals are ethical, don't you? for all we know she shares the booty and then, when the mood strikes, seeks retribution for some perceived slight... and if you refuse to acknowledge that possibility, you would make a great liberal politician... it seems that to the liberal establishment, the accused is not allowed to defend themselves against charges from even the most incredulous of accusers...

      Delete
    2. I think that your the !?! moron who needs to think before speaking. Do you believe the bull that's coming out of your mouth? You speak about morality do you know the meaning of the word? Where was the young lady's morality, and yes why doesn't she know better than to drink and get drunk at 16... let alone pass out. Had she been taught or remembered her moral code maybe she wouldn't have been raped. Don't get uptight because someone else has one and has been RAISED. GET YOUR HEAD OUT YOUR ASS.

  16. Some people, No one in there right mind would blame the young lady, The boys were wrong in what they did, but I agree, who allows thier kids at 16 to be out drinking, I'm sure it's not her first time drinking. I agree with Serena as well, she was just pointing out why even put yourself in that situation around guys and drinking.

The boys took advanatage of her, but again, parents need to take responsibility for raising their kids, and she had no business being in that situation seemingly by herself, no girlfriends around or nothing. Just a tragic situation for all.

  17. I applaud her lack of rushing to judgement... the charge of rape has become the weapon of choice, and simultaneously a weapon of mass destruction... with little more than he said she said driving most cases, these overstuffed, self aggrandized third rate prosecutors find the charge an aphrodisiac to unwarranted and ill advised attention... guilty or not the stigma of the accusation alone is devastating, and most unfortunately there little if any consequence to those leveling false charges... my belief? the false accuser should face exactly the same sentence that was facing the victims of the false charges... and while I do not belittle rape, in these times where oral sex and a utilitarian approach to sex is taught by the lame union extortionist of public schools, apparently incapable of teaching anything relevant, children today are all but instructed to be cavalier about sex, but when a charge such as this is publicized, its these tutors of moronic behavior with little regard for ethics or morality that are in fact complicit in the charge, whether true or otherwise... we instruct our pathetically undereducated children in the finer points of an irresponsible lifestyle and then act appalled when the inevitable effects surface... teaching children to play with fire then watching with morbid curiosity as the hand is played and someone is burned is not either enlightening or responsible... we have written the script then deny any culpability when the result is this potentially devastating... here's to serena, who managed to retain some degree of logic and assigned responsibility...

    1. its more what she said. accusation of rape is a weapon for women these days. its a way of getting revenge for whatever reason one wants. i find hard to believe alot of these so called " victims" especially when race is involved. we are not racist free like we been told. pur justice system is still racist.

  18. a stiff dick has no conscience and the bottom line is the girl was just as likely a willing participant until the crap hit the fan, mommy and daddy lost it, and being a good liberal, found making false accusations the easiest means of shirking responsibility... and who, by mere gender can assign blame... last time I checked there were just as many, if not more lying, devious and scheming females as males and a vagina was not a mark of purity and integrity and there are just as many lying bitches out to get even as there are legitimate charges... our schools demean the sex act then act surprised when the chickens come home to roost...

  21. I quite agree with Serena. No common sense person, and certainly not Serena, is blaming the girl for being raped, the crime is clearly that of the boys who did it and they were convicted! However, we more experienced women should give younger women the benefit of our knowledge, so let me school you. Don't ever get drunk, high, tore up, lose control, and leave your safety to those around you! By the way, at 16, who gave her alcohol in the first place?

  22. Serena is dead on. This is another instance of the media dissecting words to stir the pot on slow days. The media is a BIG PART of what is wrong with America today!

  23. You all are ridiculous!!! Serena is absolutely right!!! Is it just me, I thought the legal drinking age was 21 not 16!!!! These laws are in place to protect people and if you choose to break them then be prepared to deal with the consequences. Whether someone slipped something in her drink or not is not the issue, SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DRINKING IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! Of course it's never right to take advantage of someone or do something against their will but as Serena stated she shouldn't have been in that situation. She should've been home or supervised by an adult somewhere because 16 is not legal to do ANYTHING!!! Honestly it's the parents fault for not providing better supervision!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bravo Serena. This backlash now is a typical liberal reaction to someone (ironically a female minority) speaking the truth by making people responsible for their own stupid actions. She isn't putting the onus completely on the girl, merely saying DON'T BE A DUMB DRUNK IDIOT AROUND A BUNCH OF TESTOSTERONE AND ALCOHOL FULED JOCKS!!!! Yes, it shouldn never have happened and these guys obviously deserve punishment, but people need to be smarter and make better decisions. If you go to the zoo, poke a lion with a stick and get mauled, is it the lions fault? I believe our friend Darwin had something to say about this sort of thing....

  25. has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. My wife and I are liberal in some things and conservative in others. That said, we teach our daughter never to drink at a party to being reflex-challenged; cover your drink; never be alone with male(s), always have other girls with you. Call us when you get to the location and when you leave. We have done this so much so until is a habit of hers. She will text if she leaves to go to another location from the original to another and when she arrives. You say its crazy, I say it's an agreement between her and us up to the point that it is a home cultural practice that we respect and practice. Serena is correct in that the girl should have not put herself in that position but I go further. The parents should have taught her not to put herself in that position. Kids growing up do what that are taughts not think. Adults do what we think and unfortunately a great number of adults still behave and act like kids. Look at the congress in Washington. They think like the crowd, follow the money, and act like children: Pathetic.
