Phillies affiliate offering free funeral as part of wacky promotion

The Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies are giving fans the chance to win a free funeral. No, seriously this is a promotion.

On August 20, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs will host "Celebration of Life" night at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa., and one lucky fan will win their very own funeral courtesy of the Reichel Funeral Home and Northampton Memorial Company.

The winner of the morbid prize will be determined by choosing the best 200-word essay describing what his or her ideal funeral would be. Fans have until July 31 to submit their essay. Fans must be present at the August 20 game to win and they must also live until then to be awarded the funeral.

“The best fans in Minor League Baseball deserve the opportunity to win a once-in-a-lifetime giveaway. Unquestionably, this is the most highly-coveted ‘out-of-the-box’ promotion in IronPigs history.”

The package includes a casket, funeral direction, body removal, embalming or cremation, hearse, and a facility for the funeral service. A headstone and casket display will also be provided.

I don't know about you, but I am dying to see who wins.

  1. Ranks right up there with vasectemy night at Charleston River Dogs game. I have no clue how to spell that V word.

  2. Been there done that. The Yuma (AZ) Scorpions of the now defunct GBL Independent League did this several years ago. Had a casket out in the ball park and everything. The way the winner was chosen happened by writing the exact same type of Essay.. Imitation is the best form of flattery.. I still have the news footage on my computer.
