Clemson Tigers arrest teen in connection with rock vandalism

Clemson University police have arrested an 18-year-old for the vandalism that took place to the school's iconic Howard's Rock earlier this month.

Micah Rogers of Pigsah Forest, N.C. was charged with one felony count of malicious injury to animals or personal property valued at more than $2,000 but less than $10,000, and one misdemeanor count of trespassing.

Howard's Rock, the iconic fixture Tigers football players rub before entering Memorial Stadium, was vandalized June 2. The protective casing was destroyed and a chunk of the rock was chipped away. The broken portion of the rock has not been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.

The vandalism was partially captured by video surveillance cameras. One of the released videos shows a truck arriving at the east side of Memorial Stadium after 11 p.m. on June 2. Another video shows the truck leaving the stadium approximately 10 minutes later. An eye witness also identified the suspect.

Rogers appeared in Clemson University Municipal Court Friday morning and was released on personal recognizance bond of $5,470.

The motive for his dirty deed is unclear as Rogers has no official ties to the school. However, he does have a Tigers sticker on the glass of his truck and Clemson memorabilia in his home.

The rock is named for former Clemson football coach Frank Howard. It has been a tradition at Clemson home games since 1966, when it was first mounted atop the hill. The next year, Clemson players began rubbing the rock before running down the hill and onto the field.

The rock was left uncovered on its pedestal until it was damaged in 1992. Since then, a protective case has covered it. According to police, the pedestal was not damaged and a new case now covers the rock.

  6. Howard's Rock is a tradition that is part of Clemson history and college football. Those who made those comments about it being silly no nothing about traditions, and probably aren't dedicated fans anyway.

  8. That rock is an important part of clemson's history. And the charges were destruction of property and trespassing. This was a real disrespectful act as it has been part of Clemson's history since 1966.
