The New York Yankees have been absolutely decimated by injuries this season. Yet, somehow they have managed to stay afloat the competitive American League East.
But on Wednesday they suffered a crushing, 12-2, defeat to the Seattle Mariners at home. An early exit by starting pitcher Phil Hughes (0.2 IP) put an already exhausted bullpen in duress as the Mariners offense battered New York's pitchers all night long.
That is until the Pinstripes inserted infielder Alberto Gonzalez onto the rubber to finish out the ninth inning. Trailing 12-2, and out of options in the bullpen, New York called on Gonzalez to help lend a hand. And lend a hand he did as he induced a fly out from Robert Andino to end the frame.
Gonzalez's pitch of choice to record the out? A modest 81 MPH fastball that.
