The catch made by Juan Lagares Sunday was twice as nice. That's because the New York Mets literally had to catch the ball two times in order to retire Pirates hitter Jeanmar Gomez.
The play came in the top of the third inning, when Gomez struck a sinking line drive to center field. This is when Lagares comes charging in and attempts to make a shoestring grab as he tumbles forward. However, his momentum causes him to lose grasp of the baseball, which in turn causes it to pop out of his glove.
Then, Lagares uses a great combination of focus and coordination to secure the ball in his glove, again. Not too shabby at all.
Unfortunately, Lagares' play wasn't enough to help save the Mets from losing to the Pirates, 3-2.
