The manhood of first base umpire Manny Gonzalez was put into jeopardy Saturday afternoon as he just narrowly managed to avoid a ball hit by Toronto Blue Jays batter Colby Rasmus.
The brush with pain came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Rasmus pulled a 2-2 pitch foul off to the first base side where Gonzalez was standing. This is when Gonzalez's cat-like reflexes kick in to avoid being smacked in the groin by the sizzling baseball. As you can see, he jumps sideways and spreads his legs in a way that I'm not sure many umpires in Major League Baseball can.
Aside from dodging the ball, Gonzalez was also able to make the extremely difficult, yet correct call of foul. Blue Jays skipper John Gibbons came out to argue, and the umpires huddled up to confer, but they ultimately chose to uphold the ruling.
The call turned out to be huge as Rasmus struck out looking moments later. Then, the Jays staged a two-run rally to pull within one run, but eventually lost, 6-5.
