James Harrison says he spends $500k a year on 'body work'

At age 35, new Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Harrison is hoping to make a mark with his new team after signing a free agent deal in April. However, one thing the five-time Pro Bowler will have working against him is the wear and tear his body has taken over the years.

All NFL players eventually feel the heavy toll that the violent game places on their respective bodies. This ultimately leads to a countless number of individuals to retire well before they originally thought. But Harrison, the 2008 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, shed some light Tuesday on how he deals with keeping his body in shape in order to continue to play at a high level.

From Cincinnati.com:

“You want to stay in this business for awhile, you’re going to have to take care of your body. If you want to do that, you’re going to have to spend money. It’s not cheap…. I spend between $400,000 and $600,000 on body work, year in and year out…. I tried out maybe 150 different massage people. Now I’m down to five. I got six people I regularly see.’’ A chiropractor, he said. An acupuncturist, a homeopathic doctor, a trainer and all those masseuses. They live with him during the season.

So, there you have it. The veteran admittedly spends a half a million dollars to keep his body in top-flight condition. But 150 different masseuses, though? Really?

Harrison added that he hasn't felt this healthy since the 2008 season. That year was especially kind to him as he set a new single-season record for sacks (16) en route to winning multiple awards and honors.

Harrison may not repeat that kind of success in 2013, but it sure won't be because of a lack of effort.
