Deshaun Thomas refused to give Spurs his phone number

Deshaun Thomas is in the same boat as many other prospects right now. With the NBA Draft looming a little over a month away, the former Ohio State Buckeye is doing everything he can to convince teams to select him. But one thing he isn't doing is giving away his cell phone number freely.

According to Ohio.com, Thomas was pretty stingy when asked by the San Antonio Spurs for his digits. In fact, he wasn't willing to give his number out at all. Here's the scoop:

Thomas said teams asked him plenty of difficult and interesting questions during his interview process at the combine. But the most interesting, he said, was the fact the Spurs’ first question was for his cell phone number and his e-mail address. He gave them the e-mail, but not the phone number.

“I can’t go around giving it out to everyone,” Thomas said Thursday with a laugh. “Now if they want to draft me, I’d be happy to give it to them.”

I'm no expert, but I've got to believe this move by Thomas probably did more harm than good to his draft stock. Is there really a legitimate reason not to give teams your number? If so, I can't think of one.

  2. What an idiot, just set up a phone for VM, it may cost him 30 bucks for the month, this move might cost him 7 figures, go figure.....the logic.

  3. nah. if teams want him they will draft him. were the spurs planning to catfish him??

  4. Could it have anything to do with all of the sanctions that the NCAA hands out for receiving benefits? Louisville fans have been sending Ware all kinds of stuff but the BIG brother NCAA won't let him have them.

    1. If he's in the draft I'm assuming his NCAA eligibility is done.

    2. No this is a retard move on Mr. Thomas.. Imagine he is being quoted as saying "now if they want to draft me then they can have it!"-- eh? Does the NBA owe him anything? I guess the next thing would be.. "i have a family to protect!--" I think class should be a prerequisite in regards to potential draft prospects. Besides, anyone that has a cell phone and gives out there number and don't answer is more or less silly or well "Stupid". Anyone that doesn't give out there cell phone numbers to potential employers that can give you a six figure salary for at least 3 years is RETARDED and of course UNGRATEFUL. There is zero threat in giving out your cell phone number- if you don't want to speak to the person that is calling (which is why smart phones have number displays), then don't answer your phone. That is insane fear and paranoia and also it shows maybe he shouldn't be trusted. But denying a league in which he is there to display his skills and cutting off the number one source of communication is "nothing short" of a retard. What did he major in at Ohio State. Was ethics not part of the education! am i disgusted.. no..but aggravated to witness several hundred players that would dream of being in Mr. Thomas position. It would be hilarious if a team cant get in touch with him.

    3. Eligibility issues? It's a bit late for him to worry about those. Agents are in place and there's no scenario that leads him back to amatuer athletics. I'm sure he'd take all Ware's gifts. That situation is crazy, by the way. Are his fans trying to get their program in trouble?

  5. I hope he loses his opportunity to play for a world class organization like the Spurs (at the bottom of the first round) and fall to the Charlotte Bobcats at the top of the second round.

    1. Let me get this straight. Your desire is ill will for a kid? Yeah, it is a bad move and I don't get his reasoning, but to wish he gets burned because of it says a lot to your character. Maybe you're just a huge rival of Ohio State and universally wish them ill. I can understand that a bit more. Fan is short for fanatic so at least that is some type of positive. Sure sounds like you're a jerk however.

    1. let 's keep it true. Most (in all walks of life) young people make mistake and this is not a major issue. If it is it will speak more about the ignorance of the nba franchises than on this young man.

  9. If he gets drafted too low and ends up returning to OSU someone should check his grades-- surely he's intellectually and academically ineligible.

  10. That's because he already thinks he is privileged. Let his ass be broke like the rest of us he will definitely be a problem child in the NBA.

  12. He Controls his fate that's the problem with you people, sports is just that sports, No man should let a Sport control him, and if a team really want him then they'll do whatever to get him, just like they tried to come@ LaBron, if he wanted to go to Miami why the hell he had to inform da Cavs, players get traded all the time and don't be told anything, if these players were in college then they should of learned something. Its always the people on the outside looking in who usually has NO talent in sports to comment and think their opinion is the best!!

    1. Peace bro...

Sure, he controls his fate, but not all choices are wise. An extremely small percentage of the world's population are given the opportunity to play at the highest level of sports. So, I'm asking you: When one of the best sports organization's in the last 15 years asks you for something as basic as your phone number, what CONCEIVABLE reason is there not to?

That organization doesn't strike me as the kind to play head games.

      Delete
    2. you sound just as uneducated as he is.

    3. You need to go back to school. Learn how to spell. It is idiots like you, and idiots like DeShaun Thomas that are in the NBA that give black people a bad name. No one owes you anything. Mofo's like him should be grateful that a team is even interested. Only 1% of college players make it to the NBA, there is no guarantee we will see him in the league after 3 years, anyway. He'll end up like another ungratefull Azzhole like Allen Iverson!!!

  13. Mr. Thomas,
Asking for a contact number and an email for a prospective employee is normal. If they need to contact DeShaun for any reason, they want to make sure they can do so immediately.
The arrogance, of having to be drafted, prior to providing any communications , really shows nothing but Negro attitude and disrespect. Negroes always come up with the worst excuses and controversies. They are being given an opportunity and they never are happy as-is. They believe, erroneously, that they need to make it difficult for an organization, to make them worth it. Oh well...welcome to Wal Mart as a bagger.

    1. Amen. I agree with you. Nicely said.

    2. I think the negro mentality is that you should be grateful that someone is giving you an opportunity even though you may not necessarily like that organization or how they do business. Mr. Thomas has an agent that he pays to handle that and perhaps Mr. Thomas like myself is very protective of his personal information. I dont believe his intent was to make it hard on the Spurs to give him a job, I believe his intent was for the Spurs to take him seriously because he believes he can be a valuable asset to any organization. The caveat is for Mr. Thomas to in turn work hard and prove his worth which is still to be seen. I just sense a little envy on someones part.

  14. If is at the Rookie Combine , I'm sure he had to fill out a form or something that has is infornation on it, including his number. I would assume if he is in the draft he has an agent. Shouln't that be who the Spurs contact? I don't think short article is telling the whole story regarding him not giving his number.

I don't blame him with all the rules who knows if is he can give out his number this soon. isn't there deadlines before a team can contact Rookies/players?

  16. I see it differently. He might be like me; I don't want to go through life with a damn phone on my hip. l rarely take my cell phone with me, and if I do, I almost always leave it off, so nobody would be able to reach me anyway. BTW, I am available if the NBA wants to draft me, but I refuse to take drug tests. I don't do drugs. Only assholes do drugs. But I refuse to play the un-American game of "proving" my innocence about I crime that hasn't even occurred. Wake up America.

  18. Why is he an idiot for not wanting to give out his cell number. I really don't think that should hurt a guys chance of being a higher draft choice. Some people have a cell phone for personal and emergency calls only. Stop giving this poor kid grief over keeping his cell private. I don't go around giving

  20. This isn't that big of a deal. Everyone is bashing him because of the decision he chose. Non of the people here helped him get to where he is today, so how did all of you become experts on his personal decisions? I can understand completely why he didn't want to give out his phone number. He has no clue how his number will be used. It can be passed around to any team or news outlet that wishes to have it.

The bottom line is this, if a team wants to get in contact with him, they can simply contact his agent (or e-mail address). His agent should be handling these situations anyways. Teams have a lot of resources available to them. After all we are talking about a billion dollar industry.

  21. Maybe he is an idiot and maybe he is smarter than you think. The Spurs do things way differently than any other organization. They dont go after big names or flashy show boaters. Everyone knows that these kids have agents and that is who teams need to contact. To me this seems like a test that Thomas passed with flying colors. He didn't act ignorant like some big shot giving out his number, he did what he thought was right and stood by that. The Spurs organization looks at things like that. For them its about character. By the way im from San Antonio and have been a die hard Spurs fan since i can remember. I would accept him on this team any day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. he gave them his email so why would they need the phone number until they draft him. he is young ,but I think its a little playing hard to get.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think we are all overlooking this. I think it was a psych test by the spurs, why would that be the 1st question? I think this improves his stock. It shows he's not willing to succumb to peer pressure. Good move. Character is right.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What an ass! If he were smart! He should have just gotten a business phone from his agent and only given it to all the NBA teams, his agent and self of course...No harm and No foul...But what do you expect from a subpar OHIO STATE player...he shot them out of the tournment...shooting 3's and can't shoot! A secound round pick and D League Player...He can't start in the 25 and under at the Hank Gather's Rec Center in Philly! We call his type TUNSSA in Philly! Thats NUTASS in reverse! lol

  25. The day and age we live in... Everyone bashing and talking down on someone because he doesn't give out his cell phone number. Maybe he just doesn't want to play for the Spurs ? Maybe he actually doesn't have a cell phone? What does it matter ?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why do they need his number??? At this stage they should contact his agent. Truth is they probably plan on doing something sneaky such as a reverse trace with all information given. Teams don't generally ask for a cell number of a potential draft choice, unless they are about to call on draft day right before they are selected! That's why you hire an agent.
