Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron will be behind the wheel for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Race at Talladega Speedway this weekend. But it's not what you might think.
The Mobile, Ala. native will serve as the honorary pace car driver on Sunday. Basically, he will lead the field around the race track before the Aaron's 499, just as he led Alabama to back-to-back national championships earlier this year.
McCarron, who is dating the infamous Katherine Webb, says he grew up watching races at the historic venue and has "always had a passion to get up to speed on the track."
One driver and car combination McCarron may be rooting for is Michael Waltrip and his No. 55 Toyota. Waltrip's ride will don an Alabama national championship paint scheme for the race.
McCarron and his Tide teammates got a sneak peak of the car last month before their spring game.
The senior-to-be is coming off a 2012 campaign in which he tossed for 2,933 yards and 30 touchdowns. He is expected by many experts to be a serious contender for the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award this upcoming fall.
