Video: Coach tries to steal ball in closing seconds of French basketball game
There is the intent to cheat, and then there is this.
In a France Ligue Nationale de Basket game between Rouen and Boulogne Sur Mer over the weekend, the head coach of Rouen tried to literally steal the game away from the opposition.
With just 17.5 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and with the score tied at 84, Rouen found itself in a precarious position on defense. It desperately needed a stop to send the game into overtime. This is when Coach Laurent Sciarra decided it was time to insert a sixth man.
The guard for Boulogne dribbled the ball toward the elbow and then backed out after Rouen’s defense collapsed on him. The guard then dribbled back towards Sciarra and that’s when the coach made a mistake that cost his team the game.
Laurent was hit with a technical foul by the nearby referee after trying to steal the ball away from the opposing player. Buologne then stepped to the charity stripe to knock down both shots, thus sending Rouen to a two-point defeat.
The best part of the whole thing is the way Laurent reacts to getting caught. He adamantly denies any wrongdoing by giving an emphatic finger wave toward the official.
Who does he think he is? Dikembe Mutombo?
