Photo: NASCAR car dons pirate theme exterior to help lure sponsors


NASCAR drvier Scott Speed and his crew faced a dilemma following the Daytona 500.

The No. 95 Leavine Family Racing car found itself without any sponsors. Thus, the crew was left to find an interesting way to acquire funding elsewhere.

So, Speed came up with an idea of turning the exterior of the car into a mix between a pirate ship and an old Jolly Roger F-14 fighter jet.

After getting the nod of approval from crew chief Wally Rogers, all Speed had to do was get team owner Bob Leavine on board, as well.

"I walked over to Bob and was like, 'Bob, here's the deal, bud -- for the race we don't have sponsors on, we're going to paint this thing flat black, put the Jolly Roger on the hood. Wassup!'" Speed said. "I had Wally behind me kind of backing me up, and (Leavine) was like, 'Alright, sounds good.' And we just started rolling with it."

The exterior comes complete with a skull and crossbones along with words that read "Surrender the Sponsor" on the decklid.

Speed debuted the paint scheme in Phoenix last weekend, a race in which he finished 41st, and will have it again on his car when he runs in Las Vegas Sunday.

“The whole idea to go with a pirate theme was to draw attention to Leavine Family Racing,” Speed said. “We got off to a good start last week at Phoenix, so we decided to keep it on the car for Las Vegas.”
Apparently, the brilliant marketing idea has already paid dividends in the form of publicity and future sponsorships.

"Man, (the reaction) has been awesome," Speed said. "I couldn't believe it.... It's definitely helped, for sure, in a dollar amount already."
