Former Tennessee Vols strength coach arrested after using saw to break into arena

A former University of Tennessee basketball employee is in trouble after using a saw and his bare hands to cause mayhem inside the school's basketball arena.

Troy Willis, who spent eight seasons as the strength and conditioning coach for the Vols until being let go after last season by coach Cuonzo Martin, was arrested and charged wtih burglary, theft, and vandalism on Saturday.

According to the report, Willis snuck into the arena early Saturday morning before using a hack saw to enter the office of event management director Bill Whitesell. Once he got inside, he reportedly caused $750 in damages and swiped over $4,000 worth of items from Whitesell's desk.

Surveillance footage shows Willis walking down a hallway inside Thompson-Boling Arena with a saw in his hands and attempting to hide it underneath his coat at times.

A spokesman for the school declined to comment on the incident.

Willis has since been released on bond and is set to appear in court on March 6.

Wills was also arrested on a separate theft charge for allegedly taking a $100 bottle of tanning cream from Fusion Tanning Studio on Kingston Pike on Dec. 5, 2012. According to the report, Wills was contacted about the incident and agreed to return and pay for the product, but never did so.

He was originally hired by former Vols head coach Buzz Peterson and began working for the program during the 2004-05 season.

  4. This man is a good man who has made a mistake in judgement. Everybody messes up in life at somepoint. He just so happened to do it on the highest level. He has never been in trouble in his life until recent which tells he is suffering from possibly a drug issue Now dont misinterpret what i am saying...There is no place in society for a t.hief! What i am saying here is that there has to be more to the story. Let the judicial system play its course before passing judgement. If you do the crime...gotta do the time.! Teach our youth that life is about choices.....and when you make the wrong ones...it can be catasrophic. Praying for you!

  7. Just indicates that drugs are involved. Who in their right mind would take tanning lotion? He was let go for a reason, don't know that part of the story yet. Always come out in the end.

  8. Obviously he has some issues going on. The tanning lotion and then this. They let him go for a reason and left it at that so he could move on , deal with his issues and get a new job ... I don't see that happening anytime soon.

  9. the man was fired, let go, and hurt, and based on his past with the school deserves (by law ) a trip through the judicial system. Let the how many felons have been let go!! let the illegal's go due to sequestration and jail this man? there is a problem with the justice in this country right now and its need to be addressed! wake up and speak out if you care
