Steelers running back Chris Rainey arrested after allegedly slapping girlfriend

Update (3:34 PM) - The Steelers have announced via Twitter that they have waived Rainey.

Chris Rainey, a former running back at the University of Florida and current member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly slapping his girlfriend across the face. He has been charged with simple battery.

A Gainesville Police Department spokesperson said authorities received a 911 call around 8:30 a.m after a witness spotted a verbal altercation turn to violence.

Rainey, 24, was said to have been visiting his girlfriend at her apartment, and the two reportedly started arguing after she felt a phone in his pocket while they were hugging each other goodbye.

When his girlfriend started to question him, Rainey then proceeded to run behind the complex, discarded the phone, and left the area.

According to the report, Rainey returned a short time later to retrieve his phone. However, his girlfriend already had it in her possession.

At that point, she got inside her roommate's car, but Rainey told the roommate not to drive away. He then forced the passenger door open and tried to yank his girlfriend out of the car. Witnesses told police that Rainey slapped her across the face during the process.

That is when a nearby witness dialed 911 in fear that the incident would escalate to more violence.

Rainey's account of the occurrence was much different. He reportedly told police that his girlfriend voluntarily got out of the car, and that both fell to the ground. When she tried to flee the scene with a book bag containing the phone, Rainey told police he caught up with her, and they stumbled to the ground together for a second time while tugging for the bag.

Although he admitted to arguing over the phone, he maintains that he did not slap her nor did he inflict any kind of physical harm. No visible injuries were sustained by either party.

Rainey was booked into the Alachua County jail at approximately 10:57 a.m. and is being held without bond.

This marks the second domestic-related incident for Rainey, who was arrested in September 2010 on a felony stalking charge while he was still in the Florida Gators football program.
