Goose Gossage sounds off on the Hall of Fame voting results

Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage made it very clear how he felt about suspected steroid users and their bid for Hall of Fame election following Wednesday's BBWAA announcement.

"I think the steroids guys that are under suspicion got too many votes," he said. "I don't know why they're making this such a question and why there's so much debate. To me, they cheated. Are we going to reward these guys?"

For the record, none of the 37 candidates on the ballot garnered the 75 percent vote required for admittance -- and many of them included players that have never been linked to performance-enhancing drugs before. Nonetheless, Gossage doesn't think anyone who has been suspected should be let into baseball's greatest shrine.

"If they let these guys in ever — at any point — it's a big black eye for the Hall and for baseball," Gossage said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "It's like telling our kids you can cheat, you can do whatever you want, and it's not going to matter."

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens are among the players who many believe took PEDs to boost their careers. Gossage is one man who believes they indeed did.

"If you don't think Roger Clemens cheated, you're burying your head in the sand," Gossage said.

"I don't know if baseball knows how to deal with this at all," Gossage said. "The single-season home run record was broken by McGwire and Sosa. Why don't they strip these guys of all these numbers? You've got to suffer the consequences. You get caught cheating on a test, you get expelled from school."

Hall of Fame hurler Juan Marichal sees things differently. He believes the credentials of Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa speak for themselves, and that they belong in Cooperstown.

"I think that they have been unfair to guys who were never found guilty of anything," Marichal said. "Their stats define them as immortals. That's the reality and that cannot be denied."

While some voters maintain that they will never vote for an alleged steroid user, most project that many who were shutout today will wind up in the Hall of Fame in the future.

    5. Show me the proof. Show me a failed drug test. Show me something other than, "Everyone knows they cheated" BS. If there is no proof, the BBWAA geeks should not deny entrtance. I don't think the writers should even be involved in the voting. I wish it was former players/Veterans only. If i'm going to be judged i want it done by my peers, not by the geek who couldn't make the team and is now laughing at the power he holds.Goose, just STFU and mind your own business. You barely made it into the hall yourselves after how many decades on the list. Stop hating on those who where clearly better players than you.

  2. Hall of Fame has become a joke from who is in to how they vote for induction. That aside Gossage lost me after the first line "steroids guys that are under suspicion"

So suspicion is enough. I have suspected alot over my life.

  3. I believe that "The Goose" is right. The only reason why "Roger the Dodger" got off is that he spent a lot money do to so.
I think that MLB should put an "*" on the home run career record that Barry "Unknowningly" Bonds, and give back to "Hammerin' Hank". Remember when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's season home un record, and did in more games. The Commission at the time, put an "*" on it. Why? He was a good friend's of Ruth's.
What kind of sample does these pro ball players set for the little leaguers out there? Not a good one at all. Look, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson isn't in yet, and he did nothing, Pete Rose who was found guilty. Then there is people like "Buster" on ESPN who voted for all of them. What would he do if his kid was doing "PED'S"? Probably nothing, and egged him on!!!! Personally, I think he is a 2-faced "JACKASS".

  7. I do think that Pete Rose belongs in the HOF . as far as the suspected users if 1 gets in they all should .Admittedly Bonds and Clemens would have been in the HOF without this but if they get in where does it end ? So many have been linked between Piazza , Bagwell , Pudge Rodriguez when he is eligible so where do we stop ?

  8. So people are found guilty on suspicion. Maybe we should remove everybody from the Hall because there is suspicion of cheating, throwing games and gambling because we think players did. Because you can't tell me that all the players eligible or in the Hall didn't cheat or gamble on the game. I don't believe any of these PED players were found guilty of anything.

  10. I think the Hall of Fame needs revision that would include who gets the chance to select and a equal number of minoirity participation. Selection should not be so inflexible. Goose Gossage, was a great reliever; however, he barely got in, and, Lee Smith is every bit equal or better than Goosge and he is not in. Pete Rose has more hits than any player in history and he should be in with an asterik of course, but the man needs to be in for what he done on the field. Regarding the era of steriods, baseball coaches, players, commissioners, and the industry knew some players were using forms of steriods but did or said little; in fact, they condoned it by their silence. Mark McGuire tested positive for steriods and it was brought up during a World Series game he played while with the St. Louis Cardinals; however, during that time, the announcers doing that game noted that the steriods McGuire used were not of the class that had been banned at the time. Finally, many of these guys were great players before they even used these substances. For example, Palmero came up and was a top ten person in batting average and homers briefly for the Cubs then Baltimore. McGuire was a 40 homer 40 steals guy his roookie year. Clement's, Bonds etc., were all great players with HOF numbers. What they all have in common is the their use or alleged usage correlates a time when these players were suffering severe injuries with knees, shoulders etc. I strongly believe, and it is never, apart of the argument, that these players used these steriods because they were led to believe they promoted healing and strenght to avoid injuries and hence more time on the field being productive. These were the money ball players and the media and fans wanted them on the field. I say they belong in and if it is with a asterik, so be it. Cortizone, steriods what have you is used to keep players on the field of play because it is unhuman to play at that professional level without breaking down. Also, the league exempted many players who may have used steriods from being banned or prosecuted when they were on their fact finding mission which they don't bring up either in defense of these players. This was a thing of this era where players thought it was okay to do this. Now they know it is not and most don't; but do not blame the few that were caught up in the culture of this era.

  11. I say let them use drugs if you are willing to kill yourself for my entertainment I am all for it. However at this time PED's are banned so if they cheated all their records should be erased. I agree with the walks like a duck comment. They also have so much evidence against these guys its not even funny but for some reason when it comes to pro athletes we put blinders on to the facts. If this was a criminal case not involving famous people we would throw them under the jail with all they evidence that has been produced

  12. didnt read all the posts above so not sure if this was addressed, but pete rose only has a lifetime ban. he will get in once hes dead. as for the ped guys, if they didnt fail a drug test, i say let them in. this suspicion thing is bs. we cant pretend 20 years of baseball never happened.

  17. IT AMAZES ME THAT MAYBE THE 1000TH BEST PITCHER IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL IS OPENING HIS MOUTH UP ABOUT STEROID USE (RICH GOSSAGE). A guy who clearly does not deserve to be in there is saying guys like roger clemens who won seven cy young awards and was a hof long before he was suspected of PED abuse is not, this is extremely comical but for the fact that it is true. THE HOF FAME HAS ALREADY BEEN SEVERELY CHEAPENED BY ALLOWING RICH SEVERELY OVERRATED, I PLAYED FOR THE YANKEES, GOSSAGE INTO THE HALL. QUESTION: Is gossage against spitball cheaters NIKERO, GAYLORD PERRY, AND DON SUTTON being in the hall of fame. What about the hofers of the 70s and 80s, not only did ALL OF THEM take amphetamines but some of them took ROIDS AS WELL, should we throw them all out of the hall of fame???? AMPHETAMINES are extremely dangerous drugs, but evidently morons and extreme hypocrites like GOSSAGE don't have a problem with certain types of cheating that they themselves engaged in. What an extreme hypocrite of the highest order. THROW GOOSE GOSSAGE OUT THE HALL OF FAME, HE DOES NOT BELONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Goose Gossage, you have been one of my favorite players even though I do not agree with a lot of what your position is. You forget that you were on the outside of the HOF trying to get and wondering why they kept you out. Remember? A question: Out of the 50 Greatest Save pitchers why; the rank has active players: Mariano Rivera over 600 saves; # 2 Trevor Hoffman over 600; then, Lee Smith ranked # 3 on the all time list of non active players with 478-and he's not in the HOf; yet, Goose, you are ranked #19 on that list with a "measley" 310 Saves. Goose, can you please explain to Lee Smith why the Great know it all writers have kept him out of the HOF for nearly his 4th try??????????? Again, the Rules of Selecting players, criteria, and selectors need revision; and, an approach that is concern about what was done in the Field of Play and not how many speeding tickets, joints smoked, alchohol drunk, cortizone shots or steriod shots taken to facilitate injury. And a more diverse group of ethnics on the selection committee to lessen some of the collective biases that seem clear to me. The 50's are over. Babe Ruths record has been broken....geez, get over it.
