Derek Jeter calls mother of slain Connecticut teacher to offer support

Victoria Soto, the Sandy Hook Elementary School teacher who sacrificed her life to help save her students from gunman Adam Lanza, was laid to rest on Wednesday. Hours later, New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter reached out to her mother to offer his condolences.

From New York Daily News:

"Vicki loved the Yankees — that was part of her eulogy," her cousin James Wiltsie said Wednesday night. "No one in the family reached out, so (Jeter) must have heard about it and ... reached out."

Wiltsie then added, “It was a surprise and unexpected. Donna was ecstatic over it and very happy. She spoke to him for quite some time.”

Vicki's sister Carlee also documented the touching gesture via Twitter.
Earlier this week, another New York sports giant offered his support to a victim's family as well. Giants receiver Victor Cruz visited the family of 6-year old Jack Pinto, who was buried in a No. 80 Cruz jersey, Jack's favorite player.
