There are times in life when you just have to let go. Apparently, Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde wasn't able to on Sunday. Let me explain.
The moment came during the top of the tenth inning between the Tigers and Minnesota Twins when Valverde, for no apparent reason, winds up but holds onto the baseball throughout his delivery. The right-hander then tries to smoothly play it off by exchanging baseballs with the home plate umpire, but I'm not buying it. The play was as awkward looking as his high socks.
Further adding insult to injury was the fact that Valverde was pinned as the losing pitcher after the Tigers lost, 2-1, to the lowly Twins. Not only did they lose that game, but they also took a 10-4 thrashing earlier in the day in game one of the day-night doubleheader. Whiff.
